Judge Denny Chin
The Law School has announced that Judge Denny Chin of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York will address the Class of 2009 at the May 17th Law School Commencement.
A Hong Kong native who was appointed to the Court in 1994, Judge Chin presided over US v. Madoff, one of the largest fraud cases in United States history. This, however, was not the only notable cases over which he has presided. Interestingly, three such cases were subsequently used as the basis for episodes of Law and Order.
After graduating, Judge Chin served as a clerk with the Honorable Henry Werker. After working in private practice for two years, he worked for four years as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York.
He returned to private practice in 1986, specializing in labor and employment law, and remained in private practice until his appointment to the federal bench in 1994.
Megan Haas, 3L, noted that his speech should be very interesting given the recent news. “It’s timely in the sense that Madoff has become a symbol of this whole economic downturn.”
Evan Metaxatos, 3L, noted, “He’s exceptionally well-situated to describe the state of our financial regulatory scheme and where it should be going.”
